Sharon asks Dave if she and Cap can have a moment alone, and he says he has to get home anyway. Alone, Steve explains that he had to do this. Sharon, not getting to do that anymore because her job was getting in the way of their relationship, isn’t thrilled, saying she was a fool to think he’d change.

17 – Steve has loved Sharon since he first met her, but he wonders if love is enough to sustain them.

18 – Steve apologizes to Peggy about how he talked to her. (Note: This is the issue where Peggy state’s she’s 47, and that her and Steve’s fling was 30 years ago. So make of that what you will.)

10 – Sharon calls Steve after finding out he and Sam are back in town, asking when she’ll see him. He tells her not anytime soon – something serious has come up. Sam and Leila are missing! Sharon thinks they’ll never get a chance to simply be human and do human things, and Steve tells her he doesn’t need adding her guilt to their problems.

11 – He tells her to cool down, and she says she’s done being stiff upper-lipped and hangs up. She knows any girl would be happy to take her place because it could mean being with Captain America, but she’d be happy if he retired.

12 – Steve thinks Sharon was right to put him down.

"The Unburied One"
Writer/Penciller: Jack Kirby

Letterer: Gaspar Saladino

Editor: Jack Kirby
On Sale Date: September 14, 1976

6 – Sharon drives Steve from SHIELD’s psychiatric ward, where he’s left Sam and Leila. She tries to bring him out of his depression, but he refuses to cheer up, saying she’d be depressed, too, if she saw Sam and Leila in that place. She tells him that they were victims of the hero business – he will be, too, sooner or later. He doesn’t want to talk about it, though. Eventually, she stops the car so they can enjoy the sun and being human. She keeps trying to cheer him up, while he talks about how Captain America can’t really afford to enjoy simply being human, and yeah, she would have passed him up before the serum just like the Army did.

7 – She tells him she would have snapped him up before anyone else got the chance, they make out, and she urges him to retire again. He asks who would take his place, and Sharon says that his replacement can handle it. It could have been her and Steve in the psychiatric ward, not Sam and Leila. He tells her that that’s why he has to keep going but won’t elaborate. She storms off, and now that she’s walking away, he’s ready to explain.

10 – Steve is convinced that Sharon will call.

11 – Steve thinks that Sharon needs to learn to respect his views as well as her own (the ones he didn’t actually explain beyond “I have to keep doing this”). If Sharon wants Steve, she has to have Captain America, too. She’s got to consider that! The phone rings, and he thinks it’s Sharon, having had time to think about it. I guess now that she’s had more time to consider his argument, she’ll be easier to work things out with.

Captain America 206 [ 2 3 6 7 11 12 13 14 Letter ]

Writer/Penciller: Jack Kirby
Inker: Frank Giacoia
Letterer: James R. Novak
Colorist: Petra Scotese (Goldberg)
Editor: Jack Kirby
On Sale Date: November 9, 1976

2 – Steve alludes to how hard the hero life is on the people in their lives, and the doctor tells him Leila and Falcon have seen the worse. Steve tells him he was actually talking about Sharon, but the doctor is dismissive again and says true love will surmount any trial. He then kicks them out of the hospital.

3 – On the flight back home, Sam asks what Steve’s thinking about. Sharon! Leila tells him that Sharon is just as crazy about the team as she is, but Sam insists that Sharon is down on the superhero business. Steve says Sharon will come around – a few laughs will do it. Sam and Leila want to go dancing, but Steve tells them he’ll need them to come with him first – to Sharon’s. Because he’ll need them for support.

6 – The four of them go out to dinner, where Sharon’s attitude toward the superhero business continues.

7 – The waiter, Felix, is attacked. Sharon begs Steve and Sam not to get involved; they ignore her.

11 – Steve and Sharon go to her place after the date. Sam and Leila offer to stay and help smooth things over, but Steve declines. He walks her to her place, telling Sharon that she should calm down. She tells him that Steve and Sam are too trouble-prone, and he says they’re going to go upstairs and find out exactly where they stand. They’re so busy arguing that they don’t realize they’re being followed.

12 – Upstairs, Sharon tells him she’s tried to show him the damage his super-heroing is doing to their lives, but he thinks that she should be happy that he loves her just as much as he ever did. He’s dedicated to being Cap – she needs to help him, not fight him! She tells him that she’s fighting his ego, that he loves battle and war. He insists that he only goes into battle when he’s needed. Fortunately, they’re being gassed, so this won’t last much longer.

13 – Sharon and Steve pass out, and the men who beat up the waiter come in… and find that Steve is wearing his costume and shield under his clothes.

14 – Sam has a bad feeling and wants to call Steve, but Leila convinces him to let Steve and Sharon iron out their differences.

Letter – Ann Nichols of Arizona wants to know if Jack Kirby will resolve the Sharon and Steve breaking up thing. The response tells her to keep reading – that Sharon is just as bombastic as ever, and the subplot is in the process of being resolved.

Captain America 207 [ 7 11 Letter ]

Letterer: James R. Novak
Colorist: Petra Scotese (Goldberg)
Editor: Jack Kirby
On Sale Date: November 9, 1976

7 – Leila and Sam help Sharon come to. She smells gas, and Sam says some of it is still in the apartment. Sharon is having trouble shaking it off, and Leila and Sam realize that Steve has been kidnapped.

11 – Sam is at a SHIELD regional office, trying to find Steve when Leila comes in. Sharon is in the hospital, blaming herself for what happened to Steve. She’ll have to stay in the hospital for a few days.

Letter – Larry Twiss of Pennsylvania writes, “After many long letters requesting her presence and almost a year of waiting, we are finally privileged to see Sharon Carter within these pages. Quite frankly, I am surprised at how well that scene came off. Not only did Jack remember the sub-plot wherein Sharon dislikes Steve’s activities as Cap, but he handied it quite well. Hopefully, this will not be the last time that we see her. Jack should involve her every month, and we should see some progress along this storyline as Sharon and Cap come to face their difficulties.” I’d say Larry is me in a past life, but then he talks about how Sharon and Steve should break up, so… no. Larry is not me in a past life. Glad Marvel didn’t listen. (Thank you, especially, Mr. Ed Brubaker.

Captain America 209 [ 6 7 8 ]

Writer/Penciller: Jack Kirby

Letterer: James R. Novak
Colorist: George Roussos
Editor: Jack Kirby
On Sale Date: February 8, 1977

6 – The director of SHIELD’s regional office has been sent by Nick Fury himself to check on Sharon’s health. Leila tells him Sharon would be up in a second if he brought news of Cap. Sam is missing, too, and Sharon tells the director that Fury’s machine is cold and efficient and understands nothing of love between men and women. He tells her it knows about File 116 – and so does Sharon!

7 – He gives her the file and tells her she’s joining the case. She reminds him that she’s no longer an agent. Leila tells him off; he insists they need every available hand on the job, and he’s putting an agent to work. Sharon is already reading the file. She asks if the photos of the monsters are real, and it seems like she’s getting excited. Leila realizes that they’re about to lose another one.

8 – Sharon and Leila argue about her going on the mission (note: Sharon is now officially out of bed). The director tells Sharon he expects her at the office for her instructions. Leila tells her to tell him off, but Sharon says she’ll do what SHIELD expects of her… as soon as she gets a new hair-do. The director says to send him the bill.

Cover – Sharon’s is one of the floating heads on the cover.

10 – Sharon and her new hair-do report for duty. The regional director compliments her, and she tells him that takes care of the sweet talk – now let’s get to hard facts! He has a lead for her – the person making the monsters has to get the money from somewhere. He gives her a book with their notes and explains that she’ll get his name and photo when she’s airborne. She says she must fly, then, mustn’t she, and heads out.

11 – She takes off in a jet-copter. She puts it on automatic to get her briefing from the regional director and finds out the man she’s after is Cyrus Fenton. He’s incredibly rich and likes weird things, like making monsters. The director sends her a photo of Fenton, who she thinks looks like a dear. He urges her to treat him with caution.

16 – Zola tells the Red Skull that he’s got Captain America and his female companion in custody. The Skull sees that he’s got a jet-copter about to land on his grounds and realizes he’s got a visitor from SHIELD. He tells Zola they’ll see each other tomorrow and puts on his disguise.

17 – Sharon and the Skull, as Fenton, greet each other at the door. He invites her inside; she accepts.

13 – She shoots him with an electric pistol, as one does. She also suggests he cooperate, or she can up the level, and he agrees to comply… then mentions that he has Captain America in his hands. She doubts him and demands to be taken to him, and he agrees to take her, so long as she doesn’t alert SHIELD.

4 – On the way there, Sharon tells the Skull she’s surprised he’s acting like a gentleman. He tells her that surprise is his more favored tactic. They discuss that they’re both holding up their end of the bargain, but Sharon reminds him that she’s fully armed. The Skull, who has already called her his “dear Sharon,” muses that he regrets that the Nazi philosophy excludes the strength of women.

5 – They head toward Castle Zola in the Alps and vaguely recap the plot from their respective viewpoints. He tells her that Captain America is aiding in their monster experiments, but she refuses to believe it.

11 – Sharon arrives just in time to kill a monster attacking Donna Maria, and she gives Steve a hug. He asks if that’s her.

12 – Donna Maria says he’s blind. Which… yep. That he is. The Skull boasts, Steve recognizes the voice, Sharon recaps how she got there and pulls a gun on the Skull, who tells her that only a Nazi would pull that trigger. She isn’t so sure, but Steve says he’ll handle the skunk.

13 – The Skull punches Steve, who can’t see to defend himself. Sharon threatens to hold the Skull legally accountable for all his crimes, which impresses no one, and then there’s an earthquake.

14 – She grabs Steve and orders him and Donna Maria to run as Castle Zemo explodes, but they’re quickly separated. He orders them to save themselves and don’t look back.

15 – The Skull grabs Steve and says that if they don’t look back, they won’t see his final moments. And then the Skull is crushed by a tower.

16 – Sharon and Donna Maria go to his side. They’re soon helped by SHIELD reinforcements.

17 – Turns out Sharon didn’t tell SHIELD – she just activated a homing device and let them take it from there. They depart from the castle so Steve can get help and Sharon can write her report.
