The Can't-Miss Issues, in a Sharon Carter Fan's Opinion

First, let's start with the issues Marvel itself feels are essential, according to the Captain America: Sharon Carter collection:

TALES OF SUSPENSE (1959) 75-76, 85
These are Sharon's first-ever issues, where Steve interferes with her mission and she has to outwit both him and Batroc at the risk of her own life. Batroc later helps Sharon and Steve reunite.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: SENTINEL OF LIBERTY (1998) 1
Originally, Steve and Sharon found out each other's name when he proposed on their first date, and she turned him down because she thought he was moving too fast. Mark Waid retcons this and incorporates them learning each other's names into a dangerous mission where Steve is given an order that may destroy him. Bonus, since a large part of the story is told in flashback, we get to see Sharon as SHIELD's first ever female director in the "present."

CAPTAIN AMERICA (2004) 16-17
Bucky is alive but is on the run, and Sharon lets Steve tag along on a mission where there are reports of Bucky having been in the area. While investigating, they find a HYDRA cell. This is also the comic where Sharon and Steve officially get back together for the first time since the seventies, though they've danced around it since the nineties.

CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE SECRET AVENGERS (2011) 1
Sharon and Natasha team up to save a girl who, like Natasha, was taken as a child and turned into an assassin. Can the legendary Black Widow and her mom save the day? Can you keep a dog in the trunk?

AGE OF HEROES (2010) 3
Victoria Hand, Maria Hill, and Sharon get together to decide which Avengers teams (Victoria hands the New Avengers, Maria the regular Avengers) handle what. They're attacked by Crusher Creel, and Victoria has a cold.

Here's the book.

Other appearances recommended by Sharon fans:

CAPTAIN AMERICA V1 (1968) 108
Steve has a habit of crashing Sharon's missions because he's worried about her, and it's not always to Sharon's advantage. However, she and SHIELD learn to utilize Steve's concern for her well-being, and here, we see her outsmart friends and foes alike to get information for SHIELD.

CAPTAIN AMERICA V5 (2004) 40
Sharon is pregnant with Steve's baby. She's found out that she shot him while brainwashed, and the Skull, Zola, and Faustus have captured her and found out she's pregnant. They want to use the baby for their own ends, and they have some sort of plan for Sharon, too. She has one last chance to escape and save her baby, a child she'll protect at all costs, even if it means she'll lose everything all over again.

SECRET AVENGERS (2011) 18
Steve, Sharon, and Shang-Chi enter the multiverse to stop the Shadow Council from mining transmatter. Sharon uses the Satan Claw. Shang-Chi doesn't need it. Steve is also there.

Sharon Carter Reading Guide - for beginners and beyond!

It's true, and every comic book reader will confirm it - getting into comics can be overwhelming.

If you're here, it means that you're curious about Sharon Carter in the comics, and that's great - because a bunch of Sharon Carter fans have worked on individual reading guides for a while. After typing them out individually for a while, I thought I'd compile and give some thoughts all in one place. I hope it helps!

Main storyline

Where to Start: Captain America (2004) by Ed Brubaker
a.k.a. Captain America Vol 5
Vibe: Political spy thriller, Manchurian Candidate

Why start here: This is a ~soft reboot,~ so to speak, meaning it's an accessible introduction to the characters and gives fills in the reader where needed. It includes the major players in Cap canon and will be particularly accessible to viewers of the MCU in that the main characters are Steve, Sam, Natasha, Tony, Bucky, and the Red Skull. Sharon, in the comics, has a much, much larger role than in the films and gets significantly more development. As such, it's a great starting point for people looking to get into the Captain America comics.

One complicated bit is that after Steve's "death," Marvel Comics reverted to the Vol 1 numbering and dips into a miniseries - significant for Sharon - before continuing. As such, I'm lumping in Captain America Reborn with Vol 5.
Sharon's issues: 1-4, 6, 8-9, 12-14, 16-17, 19-22, 24-32, 35-42, 49-50, 600, Captain America Reborn 1-6, 610, 613-618.

Then: Captain America (2011) by Ed Brubaker
a.k.a. Captain America Vol 6
Vibe: Sci-fi, James Bond

Why: An almost entirely contained story that fills in events when necessary, Sharon and Steve face off against a former-ally-turned-foe from Steve and Peggy's past, a new Madame Hydra, and Baron Zemo. On their side are Sam Wilson, Clint Barton, and Tony Stark. Sharon has a lot of great stuff here, including - at one point - wings. Accessible, fast-paced, and enjoyable.
Sharon's issues: 1-19

Then: Captain America (1968) #445-454 by Mark Waid
a.k.a. Captain America Vol 1 #445-454
Vibe: Indiana Jones

Why: This run gets you caught up pretty quickly with previous events - everyone thought Sharon was dead, and everyone was wrong. Sharon was abandoned on her own, not knowing why no was there to help her when she needed it most, but now, with Steve's life and everyone's freedom on the line, she's back - hardened, jaded, and resenting that she did right by everyone else but they didn't bother doing right by her. She teams up with the Red Skull to save Steve's life, and they work together - more or less - to stop Hitler's return.
Sharon's issues: 445-454

Then: Captain America (1998) by Mark Waid
a.k.a. Captain America Vol 3
Vibe: Buddy cop with a hint of will-they-won't-they

Why: Picking up roughly where the Vol 1 left off, with a slight deviation for Steve to die (it takes place in Vol 2, in an alternate universe, and other than this has little impact on the wider Cap canon). Sharon is now a freelance agent with a personal mission - hold those who abandoned her accountable. Through the run, she heals, redefines and renews old acquaintances, and proves herself capable as the first female Director of SHIELD.

There's a brief off-road trek into the two-issue Fury/Agent 13 mini where she tracks down the man responsible for telling everyone she was dead: Nick Fury himself.
Sharon's issues: 1, 3-4, (Fury/Agent 13 1-2), 9-13, 15-21, 23, 25-31, 33-35, Captain America Annual #2000, 37-42, 45-50

Then: Captain America (2018) by Ta-Nehisi Coates
a.k.a. Captain America Vol 9
Vibe: Introspective psychological action drama

Why: This is one of the few volumes where Sharon not only gets treated as just as important as Steve, but also gets to talk about the pain and suffering she's been through and how it's affected her. Even aged due to events in previous volumes, Sharon is still a formidable force, matching wits with Kingpin, unraveling the Skull's plan, and overseeing missions with a new (old) spy team. This is also the volume where she gets her youth back, along with some extras, and that we see that, just as in previous volumes, Sharon will look up to Steve but never blindly follow him.
Sharon's issues: 1-9, 11-29

Then: Tales of Suspense #75-99 // Captain America (1968)
a.k.a. Tales of Suspense & Captain America Vol 1
Vibe: Heroic soap opera

Why: Older comics aren't to everyone's taste. They were never meant to be around for long - vendors were supposed to return all unsold copies, and as such, the stories are very short, rarely more than ten issues. On the flip side, they had little room to flesh out relationships, so the relationship drama is... intense throughout the entirely of these early comics, with on-again, off-again relationships and kissing other people (cue Ross yelling "WE WERE ON BREAK") to cause drama. To her credit, Sharon rarely allows Steve to push her around and never for long, and she is a competent and respected SHIELD agent even by her enemies. There are some story lines and verbiage typical of the era. People typically find these to enjoy about this run (my favorite is issue 108 - The Trapster), but the only way to find what you enjoy is to give the comics a chance.

Tales of Suspense was a split comic, with ten pages reserved for Captain America and ten pages reserved for Iron Man. With the 100th issue, each character headlined their own comic, with Captain America going seamlessly into Captain America #100.

A note - 231 kicks off Sharon's "death," but this is later revealed to have been an LMD. Honestly, these runs could have a reading guide of their own.
Sharon's issues: Tales of Suspense 75-76, 85, 92-95, 97-99, Captain America 100-104, 108, 113-120, 122, 124, 127, 132, 135-137, 139-157, 159-163, 165-167, 169, 176-182, 184-186, 202, 204, 206-207, 209-212, 217-218, 231-233, 236-237

Other runs

Secret Avengers (2010)
a.k.a. Secret Avengers Vol 1
Vibe: Spy thriller, hint of Ocean's 11

Why: Sharon helps Steve run the Secret Avengers. On the team are Natasha Romanoff, Rhodey, Valkyrie (Brunhilde), Moon Knight, and more. At times captured, at times a hero in her own right, often just a valued and respected part of a team, Sharon gets some great writing here, particularly in issue 18, where she uses the Satan Claw!
Sharon's issues: 1-2, 4-10, 12.1-13, 17-21

Winter Soldier (2018)
a.k.a. Winter Soldier Vol 2
Vibe: Logan. You know, the Wolverine movie. Except the kid is way more of an ass.

Why: When Bucky decides to start a program to give people a second chance, he's helped by Tony Stark and Sharon, who is his main support for the job and tries to keep him level-headed. I.e., she's the one he calls when he has to get rid of a body.
Sharon's issues: 1, 3-5

Onslaught Unleashed (2011)
Vibe: Young kids think they can handle it; old spies have to come in to help save the day
Why: Sharon and the Secret Avengers go to help Rikki Barnes (the current Nomad) take on Onslaught, someone Rikki has history with. Fun fact, Rikki is Peggy Carter and Bucky Barnes' granddaughter from another universe, which makes her a cousin of sorts to Sharon. This is the closest they ever get to meeting. They don't, but they both get some great material. Sharon even gets to beat up a brainwashed superhero - and quite rightly blames the person brainwashing him and not the hero himself.
Sharon's issues: 1-4

Single issues

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty 1 (1998) by Mark Waid
Why: This issue retcons Sharon and Steve finding out each other first name's. Originally, Steve proposes on their first date and talks about how weird it is to propose when he doesn't even know her name. Apparently, in the 1960s, that was totally cool, but by the time the 90s came around, not so much. In this issue, Steve is tasked with killing a traitorous SHIELD agent who is using his photographic memory to sell SHIELD's secrets - including information on undercover agents. Sharon finds out about his orders and knows what it will cost him to follow through. With humor, bickering, and a some feelings, it's one of the major issues. As a bonus, it gives great insight into Sharon.

Captain America and the Secret Avengers (2011) by Kelly Sue Deconnick
Why: This issue is fun. We also see a reversal of her usual role with Steve, and this time she's the one going out in the field while he stays home to do paperwork. The mission is to back up Natasha, who is trying to prevent a young woman from being turned into assassin. The two quickly get in over their heads, except for how they don't - they're Agent 13 and Black Widow, after all. Bonus: Sharon gets an honorary familial title, and there's a dog.

Age of Heroes 3 by Kelly Sue Deconnick
Why: More typical of Sharon's usual role, she's the one doing the support work while the rest of the team is off having fun. She, Victoria Hand, and Maria Hill all work support for different Avengers teams, and this is a glimpse at one of their meetings where they divide the missions to prevent stepping on each other's toes and fill each other in on things they may need to know. They're attacked by Crusher Creel and have to handle it on their own, Victoria Hand's cold be damned.

Avengers Vol 4 16 by Brian Michael Bendis
Why: Brian Michael Bendis gets Sharon's characterization right here, possibly because the issue has very little dialog. That means much of the communication here, with Sharon and Steve trying to capture Sin, is through their expressions. It works tremendously well.

Optional: Captain America: Who Will Wield the Shield? by Ed Brubaker
Why: Sharon isn't in this one much, but the art is glorious, and it's worth noting that after comforting Steve, there are hints that she goes above and beyond to watch out for him. Case in point - check out her pajamas and sleeping position between when Steve leaves their place and when he returns.

Secret Empire

This comic event gets its own section. The run is controversial and is still known - and in some quarters lamented - for how it turned Steve into a Hydra agent and argued that he was always a Hydra agent. The event technically covers more than the issues here, and it requires knowing more of the Marvel 616 universe at large. Given how many characters are impacted and involved, it's difficult for beginners to access. But if you decide you want to risk it, here are Sharon's appearances, in order as much as possible:
Captain America: Sam Wilson (2018) 1, 6-7, Captain America: Steve Rogers (2018) 1 1, 3-4, Sam Wilson 14, Steve Rogers 6-7, 9-12, 15, Secret Empire (2018) 0-1, 3, Steve Rogers 19, Secret Empire 7-9

Read with caution

Captain America (2013) by Rick Remender
Vibe: Journey to the Center of the Earth
Remender's run is significant for two reasons: it's the reason Steve and Sharon are both so much older for a while, and it introduces their son, Ian, who hasn't been seen since Nick Spencer's run. As for the rest, most Captain America and Sharon fans don't include this one on their rec list. The John Romita, Jr art throughout is an acquired taste, and the story isn't as engrossing as other runs. Sharon is "dead" for the bulk of the run, and even though Steve earlier acknowledges she will never accept his death without a body, he... accepts her death without a body. Fine for completionists, but otherwise, not so much.

Where to read

First, Marvel has all its comics available for purchase via Marvel Unlimited.

You can also buy trades (collected issues in book form, generally between 5 and 30 issues) at amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Books-A-Million.

If you don't want to spend money (and a lot of people in and around comics understand that - no one gets into writing comics for the money), you should also check out your local library. Even if your local library doesn't have anything in stock, you might be able to use them to get access to Hoopla, which will have more than just comics, and all for free. There's also a selection of free comics on the Cloud Library.

If you have any thoughts, questions, or added recs, please feel free to put them in the comments! For a nearly-full list of her appearances, here it is!
